I don't live far away - just in Mankato - so I do get to MN Lake from time to time. I am working at Crysteel Manufacturing and just received my 10 - year appreciation award. It's
been such a long time since I left the US but I believe that some of the
older folks living in Minn Lake may still remember me. My name is
Dolores Zumkeller and in 1968 I moved from my home country, the islands of
Trinidad & Tobago, to Minnesota Lake. I lived with George & Mary Harris and
was known then as Dolores Harris. I attended Minnesota Lake Public
High School and graduated in 1974. During high school I was a pom-pom girl
and in 1971 I was crowned MISS FESTAG 1st Runner-up and attended many
parades with the Festag Queen Committee. I have many fond memories of those
wonderful parades and teas. Since leaving Minnesota I very often reflect
back on how wonderful the people of Minn Lake were to me. Now, with a bit
more wisdom, I realize that so many people especially, the teachers, of MLHS
understood the problems of a 13 year old girl of east Indian decent moving
to an all white community so far away from home, family and culture. They
were always understanding and supportive and for that I have always been
thankful and appreciative.
Since leaving Minnesota, I came back
to Trinidad got married to Hans-Dieter Zumkeller of the Black Forest in
Germany and have a son Kevin. In 1986 we all moved to Germany and lived
there for 14 years. During that time Kevin and I became fluent in the
German language. In November 2000 we moved back to Trinidad and started an
Engineering and Construction Company and presently employ over 100 daily
paid workers. Hans is responsible for all Engineering and Technical matters,
I am responsible for Administration / Accounts and Kevin and his wife
Marlene are in charge of all payroll and site administration. We are
presently the electrical sub-contractors for Bouygues Battiment ofParis,
France who are building a Hyatt Regency Hotel as well as 2 office towers (29
stories) and 1 carpark in the city capital, Port of Spain.
Hopefully my story is not
too long nor too boring.
