Maple River Advisory Council

Community Education has the potential for bringing about significant and far-reaching changes in the lives of the members of the communities it serves. However, without the help and advice of the Community Education Advisory Council, Community Education would be limited to providing classes and activities based only on the best thinking of the Community Education Director. The Advisory Council is the vehicle that allows community education to move beyond the provisions of predetermined programs into a community serving role of identifying real needs and problems. The Advisory Council is the key in identifying the community education process. It is the link between the community education director, school, and the community.

The Maple River Community Education Advisory Board meets four times a year. We meet at the Mapleton site, and the time of the meeting is 4:30 pm. If you would like to serve on the MRCE Advisory Board to share your ideas, please write or call the director.

Sugar Plum Fund

The Sugar Plum Fund was set up by Maple River Community Education in 1991. The money in this special fund is for Maple River students in our communities. The Sugar Plum Fund was originally started for students with a need at Christmas. Since the fund was started, we have found that there is a need all year long. If a need is found for as student contact Community Education or any Maple River principal. This is kept confidential, and no need is too great or too small. Funds are raised at our Community Education sponsored craft sale and also by donations.

School Closings

During sever weather, watch for televised announcements or listen to your local radio to hear of any school closing, late starts, or early closings. Every attempt will be made to keep schools open , but the safety of students is of prime consideration.

This does not mean that busses will travel on all roads or driveways. The district is forty-three miles long and weather conditions may vary from one end of the district to another. Bus drivers have the discretion not to travel on roads that may seem hazardous or to turn back if the weather turns bad. We have experienced bus and van drivers that make these types of driving decisions everyday. All busses and vans have radios to notify the school of these decisions. Also, the decision of schools to stay open does not mean that it is safe for young or inexperienced drivers. If there is any question of whether to drive or not to drive to school, simply do not drive and take the bus.

Encourage your child to dress warmly before coming to school each day. Caps, mittens, and boots are appropriate and mark them for identification. The severe wind chill can easily cause frostbite.

Caution your child about winter traffic hazards. Streets and sidewalks can be slippery. Plowed snow banks limit motorist’ visibility and make attractive, but dangerous, slides.
